December 5 was International Day of the Volunteer. The following story shows just how important volunteers are.
In the past month a 3 strong shuttle fleet has carried 231 passengers and clocked up 10,949 kilometers to destinations as far afield as Wanganui and Wellington but predominately to Palmerston North. Between them volunteer drivers have given 630 hours, many of them long days starting at 6am and often not finishing until as late as 8pm.
No job is too big for St Vincent de Paul members in Dannevirke who help in other ways including running the Society shop, visiting the lonely and raising funds for the recent Philippines typhoon.
Michael Walshe, a St Vincent de Paul volunteer says "its great to be caught doing something right these days".
