A wonderful story in July’s Tablet described Invercargill’s St Vincent de Paul free wheelchair bus. On five days a week it does the rounds of 11 rest homes taking 10 residents, four in wheelchairs, on an outing, often with coordinator Tony Dowling at the wheel. He told us the oldest resident was 103. Apparently a frequent highlight of the outs for the men is a shortcut through a Mitre 10 drive-through, with management approval of course. It seems that interest in DIY never fades. By the way, Tony is more than keen to hear from anyone able to be a volunteer driver. Call Tony on 03 216 7922 or 021 027 00796.
