Help with fundraising

There are several thousand organisations competing for sponsorship and/or fundraising dollars from about 70 corporations that employ a full time sponsorship officer in New Zealand. There are a large number of other potential funders that include small to medium sized companies and charitable trusts.

  • Funders generally give cash for philanthropic, regulatory or commercial reasons.
  • Sponsors will support an organisation with cash, expertise or goods for reasons of political expediency, community acceptance or leveraging to build profile.

While funding applications are time consuming they are relatively straight forward. To gain best benefit from sponsorship arrangements, the organisation and sponsor need to integrate their leveraging, their organisations, their marketing plans and their public exposure strategies.

Not all funding applications will be successful and similarly, not all sponsorship arrangements are profitable. It is advisable to have a sponsorship strategy that clearly identifies what St Vincent de Paul Society has to offer a sponsor and what the Society expects from sponsorship activity.

For example, for a sponsor the St Vincent de Paul Society brand could motivate staff, cement relationships with customers, provide opportunities for the sales force, provide a communication message for stakeholders, entertain board members, and address good corporate citizenship. For St Vincent de Paul Society , an integrated sponsorship campaign can provide opportunities to gain access to new volunteers, potential donors and skilled people, provide opportunities for suppliers, business partners and other stakeholders that allows the Society to extend its audience, provide much needed expertise, coaching or capacity build by utilising a sponsor PR company or advertising agency to help a campaign and there is always the possibility of sponsor products that could be on-sold.
